SUMMARY:WiS: Mental Health from PIs to Mentees
DESCRIPTION:The Women in Science will host an event to discuss practices that investigators and lab members can incorporate to create an environment that promotes mental health. This event was motivated by stories from lab leaders and trainees who have expressed having difficulties with managing a lab\, receiving training and connecting with lab members\, while maintaining productivity\, amid the pandemic. We have invited two outstanding speakers\, experts in leadership and wellness\, to lead this discussion. \nWe encourage principal investigators and lab members to attend this event and participate in the discussion. We hope that this event can serve as a resource and source of support for the Martinos Community. \nLouisa Sylvia\, PhD is a psychologist and Director of Health and Wellness at the Red Sox Foundation\, the Director of the Office of Woman’s Careers at MGH\, an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School\, and Associate Director at the Dauten Family Center for Bipolar Treatment Innovation at MGH. \nMargaret Moore\, MBA is the co-founder and Chair of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital\, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School\, and a course director of the annual Coaching in Leadership & Healthcare conference organized by the Institute of Coaching and delivered by Harvard Medical School. She is a co-founder and executive board member of the National Consortium for Credentialing Health & Wellness Coaches and led the formation of a strategic partnership with the National Board of Medical Examiners to deliver national standards and certification of health and wellness coaches. \nZoom link: https://zoom.us/j/92349871173

SUMMARY:WiS: Gender Diversity – What Everyone Needs to Know
DESCRIPTION:Please note you should register in advance for this webinar (link at bottom). \nAre you involved in human research\, whether as a PI\, a postdoc\, a research\ncoordinator\, or anything in between? Do you ever work with other human\nbeings? If either of those are true\, join us for this event to find out what\nyou should know about the gender spectrum. Healthcare has begun to make\nstrides in addressing the needs of transgender and other gender diverse\npeople\, while many areas of research have been slower to adapt. It’s\ncrucial for researchers to understand the differences between sex and gender\,\nthe terminology around gender diversity\, and how to create a safe and\ncomfortable environment for transgender and gender diverse people\, at work\,\nin the lab\, and in the world at large. \nIf you screen or talk to research participants\, or are in charge of those who\ndo\, and you’ve ever felt uncertain about how to respectfully ask questions\nabout gender\, felt confused about when and how to use pronouns\, come to this\ntalk! If you’re not sure how to support a colleague who’s come out as\ntransgender or nonbinary\, bring your questions! If you’re not sure how this\nis relevant to your work or life\, come find out! \nOur speakers:\nAlexis Drutchas\, MD (she/her) is an attending physician in the Division of\nPalliative Care and in the Transgender Health Program at MGH. Originally from\nDetroit\, Michigan\, Dr. Drutchas received her medical degree from Wayne State\nUniversity School of Medicine. She went on to complete her residency in\nFamily Medicine at Brown University in Providence\, Rhode Island\, at which\ntime she co-founded the RI Trans Health Conference in 2014. Following this\,\nDr. Drutchas worked at Fenway Health and gained expertise in gender affirming\ncare and caring for LGBTQ+ patients and families. Dr. Drutchas completed her\nfellowship in Palliative Care through the Harvard Palliative Care Fellowship\nProgram\, and joined the MGH Palliative Care service as an attending in\nAugust\, 2020. \nMelanie Cohn-Hopwood\, MSW\, LICSW (she/her) has been at MGH working with HIV+\nindividuals for the past 7.5 years\, and in the Transgender Health Program\nsince its inception 2 years ago. She has expertise in mental health treatment\nwith people who are LGBTQIA+ and HIV+. Prior to coming to MGH\, Melanie\ndirected a harm reduction medication adherence program for people living with\nHIV at the Boston Living Center and worked as a therapist at Fenway Health\nCenter. \n  \nRegister in advance for this webinar here\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

SUMMARY:Women in Science Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Book: On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous | A Novel by Ocean Vuong \n \nWe’re reading award-winning poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel “On Earth We’re Briefly\nGorgeous.” This innovative\, lyrical novel moves from the narrator’s experience as a\nVietnamese refugee to the blossoming of his queer identity\, while weaving in the\noften brutal wartime history that shaped the lives of his family\, and in turn\, his\nown. Visceral yet also tender\, the book deals with the bonds of family\, the\nrealities of generational trauma\, and questions of belonging and American identity. \nIt was awarded the 2019 New England Book Award for Fiction and named a best book of\nthe year by Booklist\, Kirkus Reviews\, TIME\, The Washington Post\, The New Yorker\,\nNPR\, Vanity Fair\, and others. \nAs a reminder\, all are welcome to join the discussion even if you have not finished\nthe book! \n  \nZoom link: https://zoom.us/j/93543970389

SUMMARY:Big Brothers Big Sisters Virtual Lunch & Learn!
DESCRIPTION:Empower the Potential of Children\n\n\n–\nFor more than 70 years\, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Eastern Massachusetts has partnered with under-resourced families to provide their kids with transformational\, one-to-one professionally supported relationships with caring adult mentors\, so that their children reach their full potential. We accomplish this mission with Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion as core values. We believe that we maximize our impact and truly thrive as an organization when perspectives are diverse\, our culture is inclusive\, and our practices model the equity we want to see in the world.\n\n\n–\nIt is our belief that one of the solutions is to bring people together that are different from each other. With the nature of our matching and with the recognition that our kids and Bigs come from different places\, we are helping everyone to come together. Not only have children’s lives been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic\, as a country we are facing the unavoidable reality of the tragedy of racism. This inequity directly impacts all of the kids we serve\, many of whom are children of color. As adults\, how we respond and support children in our community will impact how they will view themselves\, and their potential in the world. Our kids need you to be part of the solution and that is why our mission is more urgent than ever.\n\n\n–\nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 21st for a virtual Lunch & Learn to learn more about the different programs available and the benefits of volunteering. You will also have an opportunity to hear current MGH employees discuss their time as Bigs\, the experiences they’ve had while involved\, and how they balance volunteering with their personal and professional lives.\n\n\n\n\n–\nEvent Details:\nWhat: Big Brothers Big Sisters Virtual Lunch & Learn!\nWhen: Wednesday\, October 21\, 2020\, 12:00-1:ooPM\nWhere: Zoom; Please RSVP here\nWhy: To engage additional MGH employees as mentors for children in the local community\n\n\n\n\n–\nIf you have any questions about the event\, please reach out to Michael Wright of Big Brothers Big Sisters at mwright@emassbigs.org
