Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) / Noninvasive Brain Stimulation

Center research in this domain focuses on advancing precise, image-guided tools to map and modulate human brain circuits. Investigators develop MRI-guided targeting systems, hybrid TMS–imaging platforms, computational models, and next-generation stimulation hardware that enable researchers to probe causal relationships within the brain. These technologies are used to deepen understanding of cognition and neural connectivity and to explore new therapeutic strategies for conditions such as depression, stroke, chronic pain, and other neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. By pairing brain stimulation with advanced imaging, Martinos scientists can directly test how specific circuits contribute to behavior and disease — opening new pathways for both discovery and clinical innovation.
